Thomas Sowell nació en Estados Unidos, en el estado de Carolina del Norte y creció en Harlem, Nueva York. Al igual que muchos de su barrio, abandonó el hogar tempranamente y no acabó la secundaria. Los años subsiguientes fueron muy difíciles para él y finalmente se alistó en los Marines llegando a ser fotógrafo en la Guerra de Corea.Después de dejar el servicio, el Dr. Sowell entró a la Universidad de Harvard, trabajó media jornada como fotógrafo y estudió la ciencia que se convertiría en su pasión: La Economía. Se graduó magna cum laude en Harvard, sacó su master en Columbia y su doctorado en la Universidad de Chicago. Escritor prolífico de una variedad de temas desde economía clásica a derechos civiles, autor de una docena de libros y cientos de artículos, la mayor parte de sus escritos son considerados pioneros entre los académicos. Sobre sus escritos cuenta el prestigioso periodista George F. Will que el Dr. Sowell ha demostrado que se puede escribir algo importante y con fundamento en un espacio tan pequeño como un artículo periodístico de sólo 750 palabras. Ganador del prestigioso premio Francis Boyer presentado por el American Enterprise Institute, actualmente es especialista decano del Instituto Hoover y de la Fundación Rose and Milton Friedman
